How to tell if your child is ready to start kindergarten: Kids in Rhythm

Starting kindergarten is a big milestone for kids. It's the first time they're in school all day, and can be nerve-wracking for both parents and children. So how do you know if your child is ready to take on this new challenge? There are a few things to look for that will help you decide.

What should my child know before starting Kindergarten?

It is important to check with your local school district before enrolling in kindergarten. You can mostly likely find the requirements and laws about starting school on their website, or by calling up a secretary at no cost for information on the Curriculum - this will help ensure that you are prepared enough when it comes time.

It is important to check out the requirements several months before enrolling. This will allow you some time to decide if you feel that your child is fully ready for Kindergarten. There's no one specific age that you can mark on the calendar or rules as being when your child is ready for kindergarten, but there are some common expectations (see below). Having all of this information available from your local school district will help inform a decision.

Is my child ready to enroll kindergarten?

Your child is most likely ready for Kindergarten if they:

  • Get along with their peers. It would be ideal if your child had these skills when enrolling in kindergarten, but sometimes sharing and taking turns are skills that require years ( if not not a lifetime) to master.

  • Are showing an interest in learning. It helps if your child has an interest in learning and seems stimulated by all the information. They don't need to be a genius, but if they enjoy listening to music, stories and books then this is one indicator that they are ready for the challenges of kindergarten.

  • know how to use the restroom. Make sure your child knows when they have to go. They should be able handle it by themselves

  • Can follow simple instruction. Experts advise that young children should be able to follow one or two steps at a time that are very specific and concrete. It's important to keep in mind that children at this phase in their life cannot be expected to follow complex instructions.

  • Can recognize some numbers and letters of the alphabet. There’s no need to stress if your child is not reading by the time they start Kindergarten. But it is important for them to at least recognize some of our alphabet letters and numbers. Once children learn a few letters the rest will soon follow.

When making a decision whether your child is ready or not, it is important that you talk with the people most familiar with them: their current teachers, caregivers, pediatrician, and potential future kindergarten teachers. They can provide you with the best information.

I think one of the best things we can do as parents is to reach out and have conversations with these other people. It gives us a sense for perspective, and can help build a strong community to help aid us in our child's development.

“There’s a difference between a child really being ready and a child being more than ready,” says Kyle Snow, a specialist in early child education and senior research associate at RMC Research.

If you think your child is ready for kindergarten, don't wait until they're older. Doing this can cause them to be so bored that he or she will slack off instead of excel in the classroom. Looking out for these signs and consulting with the rest of his support system will help you decide if your little one has been academically prepared enough before starting Kindergarten.
